2024-07-07 The Integration of Medicine and Buddhism: Miami Temple Explores Buddhist Perspectives on Illness

On July 7, the International Buddhist Progress Society (IBPS) Miami Boca Chapter invited senior BLIA (Buddha’s Light International Association) member and renowned South Florida Chinese medicine doctor, Dr. He-Ming Du, to conduct a medical sharing session on the theme "Buddhism and Perspectives on Illness."

Dr. Du introduced the session with a video excerpt from BLIA Secretary-General Venerable Juepei’s Dharma talk, providing insights on maintaining a positive mindset when facing illness. He emphasized the importance of staying grounded in mindfulness and the right path, understanding the limitations of the physical body, and learning to acknowledge illness without suffering from it.

Dr. Du categorized diseases into three types:

  1. Physical Illness – Caused by external factors such as environmental and climatic changes.

  2. Internal Illness – Resulting from improper diet and irregular lifestyle habits.

  3. Karmic or Spiritual Illness – Related to the law of cause and effect, which can be alleviated through Buddhist practices such as chanting, repentance, and devotion.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) emphasizes harmony with nature, and for mental health conditions, Dr. Du highlighted that maintaining faith and receiving proper spiritual guidance can lead to healing. Addressing concerns such as allergies, obesity, and depression, he encouraged attendees to remain vigilant, manage their emotions, and adopt preventive health measures in daily life.

To conclude, Dr. Du introduced a Buddhist-inspired formula believed to promote well-being, ward off misfortune, and extend longevity. He affirmed that through dedicated practice, individuals could effectively reduce illness and improve their quality of life.

On behalf of the Miami Chapter, President Han-Cheng Mei expressed gratitude to Dr. Du for his insightful and compassionate lecture. Attendees found the session deeply enriching, gaining not only a greater understanding of Buddhism but also enhanced courage and confidence in facing health challenges.
