2024-02-25 Honoring the First Anniversary of Venerable Master Hsing Yun's Passing

Updated: Mar 5

To commemorate the first anniversary of the passing of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, Miami Fo Guang Shan and the BLIA Miami Chapter held the "Guiding Light, Remembering the Master’s Teachings" event on February 25 at the temple. After the midday meal, more than 50 Fo Guang members gathered in the Main Shrine to sing Buddhist songs that express the beauty of the Dharma. Through melodies from Sounds of the Human World and poems written by the Master, attendees conveyed their deep longing for him. They also reminisced about their personal experiences with the Master by sharing photos and reflections, while drawing wisdom from his teachings and the Hundred Methods of Overcoming Challenges, allowing everyone to express gratitude for the Master's guidance.

Spreading the Sounds of the Human World was the best way to pay tribute to Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Under the sign language direction of Chen Rong, the Miami Fo Guang Choir performed Lighting a Lamp, filling the space with a gentle and soothing melody. Led by Zhang Fengying, the Charity Care Group sang the Master’s poems The Threefold Bliss of Life and Life Is but a Dream in Buddhist chant style. The simple yet harmonious voices not only filled everyone with joy but also purified their hearts, transforming the Master’s poetry into a lasting melody within their lives.

"The Buddha expounds the Dharma with one voice, yet all beings understand it in their own way." Every word, every action of Venerable Master Hsing Yun carried deep influence. Association Supervisor Zhao Guanglong, President Mei Hanzheng, BLIA Dharma Lecturer Hao Lewei, Sun Shuling and his wife, Vice President of the Fort Lauderdale Subchapter Lin Xiuzhen, senior volunteer Ye Jingmei, and former Youth Group Secretary Richard Yang all took the stage to share their memories of the Master. As they reflected on nostalgic photographs, everyone could feel the Master’s boundless compassion and wisdom.

To help attendees gain a deeper understanding of Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s emphasis on education, Venerable Jueyan led the Wisdom Life Pouch activity, where participants drew a phrase from the Hundred Methods of Overcoming Challenges and shared its meaning with the group. Additionally, attendees selected wisdom quotes from the Master’s works, including Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, A Prayer for Self-Confidence, A Prayer to the Medicine Buddha, and Wisdom from the Root of Fo Guang, placing them into a small pouch to take home as a life talisman, serving as a constant reminder to cultivate diligence and self-improvement.

Zhang Fengying recalled how, despite enduring illness in his later years, the Master always cared for others and would ask, "What more can I do for you?" This deeply moved her, inspiring her since 2016 to follow in the Master’s compassionate footsteps by visiting nursing homes to bring warmth to the elderly. She expressed gratitude for the wisdom Venerable Master Hsing Yun left behind, which serves as a pillar of strength for all. Whenever she misses the Master, she sings his poems, feeling deeply connected to his teachings.

President Mei Hanzheng shared that he first encountered Buddhism in 2003 when he met the Master at the Miami temple. The Master's warm and approachable demeanor, along with his insightful lectures, left a lasting impression. When he met the Master again in 2009 at Hsi Lai Temple, he listened to the lecture I Am the Buddha, which deepened his understanding of the direct path to spiritual responsibility. That moment inspired him to vow to serve as a volunteer, supporting the temple and promoting Humanistic Buddhism.
