The second anniversary of the passing of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the founding patriarch of Fo Guang Shan, was commemorated by Miami Fo Guang Shan along with Fo Guang members worldwide. On February 16, a memorial event titled "Star Lamp, Master's Words – Remembering the Patriarch" was held at the temple. Venerable Jue Yan, along with nearly 40 devotees, honored the Master through "Sounds of the Human World," "Hsing Yun's Teachings," and "Three Acts of Goodness" wishes, vowing to practice kindness, speak good words, and do good deeds daily. The event featured various expressions of remembrance for Venerable Master Hsing Yun.
During the memorial, members of the Miami Association's Charity and Care Group respectfully performed the song "Sounds of the Human World" with the auspicious drum, using melodious and ethereal music to convey their admiration and remembrance of the founding patriarch.
Association President Yan-Hua Deng shared insights through the song "Lighting the Lamp," encouraging everyone to ignite the light within their hearts and pass it on, continuing the compassionate spirit of Venerable Master Hsing Yun.
Member Feng-Ying Zhang from the Fort Lauderdale subchapter shared reflections on "Flowing," emphasizing the wisdom of adapting to life’s challenges like water: "When encountering mountains, water flows around them; when meeting rocks, water finds its way; when reaching shores, water adjusts; when encountering boats, water moves along." She encouraged a gentle and adaptable approach to life.
Jin-Ling Luo from the West Palm Beach subchapter performed "Hymn to the Master," a tribute to Venerable Master Hsing Yun's compassionate vows, creating a solemn yet warm atmosphere.
Venerable Jue Yan expressed that singing "Sounds of the Human World" is one of the best ways to honor the Master. Special selections, including "Hymn to the Master," "Everyone Practices the Three Acts of Goodness," "Song of Fo Guang Shan," "Lighting the Lamp," "Life Is Like a Dream," "Giving," "Pilgrimage," and "Aspiring to Bodhi," were chosen to commemorate the Master through music.
The event continued with participants drawing "Hsing Yun’s Teachings" and "Three Acts of Goodness" cards in both Chinese and English, sharing Buddhist wisdom. Venerable Jue Yan reminded everyone to vow to practice the Three Acts of Goodness daily and to track their progress on the cards, following Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s teachings.
To further commemorate the occasion, the temple specially prepared Yangzhou dumplings to share with attendees. Volunteers carefully prepared the ingredients, kneaded the dough, wrapped the fillings, and cooked them—all with heartfelt reverence and gratitude for the Master. These Yangzhou dumplings were not just a delicacy but a symbol of tradition and a way to remember and honor the Master's teachings.
First-time temple visitor Priscilla Camargo, a Portuguese speaker, joyfully shared her reflections on the "Hsing Yun’s Teachings" card she drew, gaining a deeper understanding of Buddhism. Additionally, Peng Ziyang and Yang Lusha, two international finance graduate students from the University of Miami, discovered the temple online and attended the memorial for the first time. They expressed how the Master's wise words had benefited them and later sought further guidance from the Venerable, expressing their happiness and intention to continue learning Buddhism at the temple.
