After more than two months of preparation, the Miami Fo Guang Youth Group successfully hosted the Fo Guang Children’s Summer Camp from June 6–8. This year’s camp was themed around Disney’s animated film Moana 2, guided by the “Three Acts of Goodness”—Do Good Deeds, Speak Good Words, Think Good Thoughts. Through obstacle course challenges, water-based team activities, and green gratitude–themed programs, 16 children were introduced to the spirit of the Three Acts of Goodness, cultivating kindness, teamwork, and environmental awareness. Over the three days, the children grew joyfully through laughter, while the youth members gained precious experience in leadership and service.
The first day opened with a lively dance performance, “Walk Out,” by 30 youth volunteers, symbolizing the children bravely embarking on an adventure like Moana. The theme of the day was “Obstacle Challenge Day.” The main hall was transformed into an ocean exploration site, with backdrops crafted from recycled and natural materials. Children were divided into groups to pass through “caves,” search for keys, and rescue the trapped Maui, fostering teamwork and adventurous courage.
The second day, “Water Activity Day,” was filled with creativity and teamwork. Wearing their self-painted Three Acts T-shirts, the children enjoyed outdoor group games such as the Balloon Snake Relay, the Leaky Cup Challenge, and “Don’t Let the Balloon Pop.” Laughter echoed throughout as they learned cooperation and communication through playful competition. The “Life Science Experiments” were equally exciting. Guided by youth counselors, the children carried out hands-on experiments like Lava Lamps and Elephant Toothpaste, sparking curiosity and logical thinking. Counselors encouraged them to predict outcomes by asking: “What do you think will happen next?” This made the day one of the most thrilling and unforgettable of the camp.
The final day, “Green Gratitude Day,” invited Japanese cuisine chef Jerry to teach the children how to make hand-rolled sushi. Several children lovingly set aside their creations, saying they wanted to save them for their parents, expressing heartfelt gratitude in a simple way. In the afternoon, Miami Fo Guang Association supervisor Zhao Guanglong led a hands-on session on “How to Plant a Tree.” The children planted mulberry saplings, learning soil preparation, watering, and care. They also discovered the benefits of trees—purifying the air, regulating temperature—nurturing their sense of responsibility for the Earth.
Parents Liz and Jeremy shared that their 5-year-old daughter Diana was reluctant to join on the first day, but later returned home excitedly recounting her adventures. By the last day, she said: “I want to come to summer camp every day!” First-time squad leader Yulin reflected: “I’m grateful for this opportunity, which gave me confidence in my leadership and organizational skills. I especially thank our vice leader Mayleen for her patient guidance, which helped me quickly adapt and feel at ease in my role.” Youth group president Harrison, who served as overall team counselor, added: “I learned how to lead with patience and kindness. Leadership isn’t just about giving orders—it’s about staying calm, uniting the team, and setting an example. This experience taught me so much, and I hope to inspire others too.”
This summer camp was more than just a journey of learning and growth for the children—it also allowed the youth group to build leadership, compassion, and a spirit of service, laying a strong foundation for their future paths.
